SUDBURY - Federal authorities on Friday arrested a Sudbury man on child pornography charges, authorities said.

Tyson Tu, 49, was arrested about 9 a.m. at his home on Colburn Circle.

He is charged with one count each of receipt of child pornography and possession of child pornography. According to police, a Sudbury man was using the "dark web" to find child pornography images.

Sudbury police arrested Tu in April after a joint investigation with the Department of Homeland Security's Cyber Crimes/Child Exploitation Task Force.

During the investigation, Sudbury police said they obtained several subpoenas and served several search warrants, as well as used surveillance, while investigating Tu. During the investigation, police found "multiple images of very young minor aged victims."

According to police, Tu was using the "dark web" to find the images. The "dark web" is a term given to encrypted online content that is not found on normal search engines.

Tu was originally charged in district court, but the case is now being handled federally.

If convicted, Tu faces between five and 20 years in federal prison, and as much as a lifetime of supervised release, as well as a $250,000 fine.

Tu was scheduled to appear later Friday in U.S. District Court in Boston.
